HAM Related QSO / DIY Dipoles

HI, I was told by a friend that if you put multiple dipoles on a single feed line that you had to separate the feed point by at least 5" or you would have probs. and yet the ARRL handbook shows them coming out of the same feed point. Anyone know about this?
